Morning Thought 5 Friday
April 28th 2017 (Cot mattress)
Good morning
The phone rang and I answered it. It was a
gentleman offering Mustard Seed Jersey a child’s cot. He explained that his
grandchildren were now grown up and so they no longer needed the cot. He
assured me it was in good condition. I thanked him for thinking of our charity
and those less fortunate in Romania, then I asked about the mattress.
“Oh no sorry there is no mattress, we no longer
have the mattress”.
Now that changed everything as to the poorest of
the poor the mattress is all important. So I replied “Thank you but No thank
you. Without a mattress the cot frame is no good to us, the poor families we
assist will need a mattress.”
Now I fully expected that to be the end of the
matter. I was very surprised a few days later when the same gentleman phoned me
up. He said “My wife and I talked and we agree we want this cot to benefit more
children, so we will buy a new mattress for the cot”.
“That is fantastic” I said. “That will be such a
special blessing to a poor family to have a brand new mattress as well as a
sturdy cot”.
Very often when we give, we don’t take into
account what is really needed.
Let me end with a quote from Mother Teresa or
St Teresa “At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we
have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done.
We will be judged by the words of Christ “I was hungry, and you gave me
something to eat, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless, and you took
me in.”
