Morning Thought for Friday July 12th 2013 03/06/2013
Good morning
I have just returned from distributing humanitarian aid in Romania with
Mustard Seed Jersey. After going to Romania for 17 years I now have some very
strong relationships with some of the people we have helped and got to know
over the years.
I first came across some of the young women in the year 2000 when
Mustard Seed was approached to assist them when they were found sleeping under
a bridge. They were homeless after leaving the state orphanage at the age of
18. Through the teaching and love of the
social workers these young women became self sufficient, with employment and
their own flat; though now with the recession they are again struggling to
support themselves financially.
So on my last day which was a Sunday I arranged to meet them at MacDonalds for lunch. For them this was a treat. On their
small salaries they could never afford to eat at Macdonalds,
they could rarely afford to buy more expensive food like meat or fish.
As we sat in the sunshine, they filled me in on all their news. After a
while some small dirty children came along begging. I was amazed to see how
generous the young women were in giving some of their precious lunch to these
filthy kids. The kids went away happy fed. But what struck me was the young
women's generosity in sharing what they had with others in need. I had given to
them and now they wanted to share the blessing.
The words of Jesus spring to my mind “It
is more blessed to give than to receive”.
