MORNING THOUGHT WEDNESDAY September 30th 2009

This morning I want to tell you Geta’s story and share with you the difference Mustard Seed has made to her life in Romania.

Geta is an intelligent teenager, who gained sufficiently high grades to go to high school. She was a member of the youth club run by the Romanian social workers Nelu and Cristina, assisted by Mustard Seed.

It was clear life was hard for Geta and at times there were traces of bruises visible, so the social workers watched her very closely and made sure she knew they cared about her.

Many people suffered much during the communist regime and with some it seems it has resulted in their causing suffering and abusing their own children. This was the case with Geta.

Then one day Geta came to Nelu and Cristina quite distraught and this time with unmistakable bruises and cuts. Finally she was able to calm herself enough to explain her father had thrown her out and hurled stones at her because she had refused to earn money to buy him alcohol  by either begging or prostitution. A trip to see the parents confirmed to the social workers that there was really no hope of reconciliation and suddenly they had a terrified 14 year old girl without home or any means to support herself.

Mustard Seed had left a small amount of money with the social worker Nelu for emergencies and Geta’s plight was just such an emergency. They were able to buy her food, arrange accommodation at the school, and provide school materials from that money and to give her clothes and bedding from the last Mustard Seed aid consignment. They appealed to Mustard Seed to assist Geta, to provide food and the other essentials until she has achieved her qualifications and can get employment.

I am so pleased to tell you that now there is a Jersey sponsor who assists Geta regularly through Mustard Seed’s sponsorship programme. And Geta is doing very well with her studies at high school. Last year the sponsor packed her a Christmas shoebox and Geta was so over-joyed and appreciative that she wrote a letter of thanks in her best English. I am sure that her sponsor will pack her a shoebox again this year.

If you want to pack a Christmas shoebox there is information at the Parish Halls.

Have a good day and take time during the day to think of or possibly pray for Geta and others like her.

And be thankful for the many good things we enjoy here in Jersey, for education, for families and caring friends, for the many good things God has given us.
